What are you navigating?

You are navigating practice. The page leads with the traditional layer — the hour, the day and the moon — because that is the layer this work is timed by.

Choosing this changes the ORDER of what you are shown and nothing else. Every figure on the page is the same whichever you pick — the sky does not rearrange itself around what you want. Clear it.

Hours ahead kept for this

No hour kept for spirit is left today — the tradition assigns these to Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and none of them rules an hour between now and midnight. Tomorrow has three.

The circuit TRADITIONAL

STRUCTURECENTREEXPANSION

Give it edges, then settle what it is for, then ask for more.

These seven are FUNCTIONS rather than moods: what each one does to a thing, not what it says about you. The order is the part worth arguing with — you cannot expand something that has no edges, and pushing before a thing has a centre is how effort gets wasted, so containing and centring come first and expansion comes last. That sequence is an editorial position, not a measurement. A practitioner who orders them differently is not wrong.

    ATTRACTIONVenusretrograde40

Draws toward. Makes a thing wanted, valued, worth approaching.

Revisit what you value, or repair something between people.

    • Nothing is amplifying Venus today. The function is still available — every one of the seven always is - it is simply not the loudest.

The numbers count nameable things — whose hour it is, whose day it is, how many contacts that planet is making to this chart, and whether the tradition keeps it for spirit. Every one of them is listed beside the figure so you can disagree with a reason and discount it. None of the seven is ever absent — all of them are always available, and what changes is which is loudest. A retrograde planet is not a weaker function; it is the same function turned inward, so it changes the verb and not the score.

A house is a wedge of sky fixed to the horizon at one birth minute, and it never moves again. The sky does — so at every instant each moving body is standing in one of these rooms, and which room is arithmetic: a longitude compared against twelve cusp degrees. The rooms are not the same size. These are Placidus cusps, which divide the time a degree takes to rise rather than the space it crosses, so the widest room here is genuinely the one the sky takes longest to cross. A lit room means occupied and nothing else — not favoured, not strong, not a good place for anything. What each room is FOR is the inherited half, and it carries its own label on every line.

  • siderealVirgo 17.9°Measured from the fixed stars, which the equinox drifts against by about a degree every 72 years. Most Indian practice reads the sky this way and gets a different sign for the same birth. Neither frame is a mistake; they answer different questions.

These are published articles, listed because of the objective you chose and for no other reason. What the sky is doing is upstairs, separately, and the two are not evidence for each other.

Every planet at its computed longitude, on a plane tilted away from you. Play it and the whole sky runs forward three days at present speeds — the same arithmetic as the times printed below, and accurate for the same reasons. The pale ticks on the rim are this chart’s Sun, Moon and angles, which do not move; watching a planet close on one of them is watching a transit arrive. Orbit spacing is not to scale — Pluto’s year is a thousand times Mercury’s, so the rings are spaced by period on a log scale. The order is real; the gaps are legible rather than true.

The line is degrees from exact — how near the closest aspect to this chart is, hour by hour. Top of the plot is exact, the axis is labelled, and it starts at zero: the shape belongs to the sky and not to the scale. Where the line touches the top an aspect perfects, which is why every trough has a pin above it in the list below. It is not a score of how good the days are and it is not the engagement figure further down — that one is flat by design over three days, and stretching an axis to make it look otherwise would be a picture of nothing. Positions are carried forward at each body’s speed right now, so a few hours out is good to the minute and three days out is good to about the hour — anything marked approx is past that line. Retrograde stations are deliberately absent: a station IS a change of speed, so this method cannot see one coming and will not pretend to.

The Moon is not void

It still has to make conjunct Jupiter at 06:15 tomorrow, and goes void after that until it enters Virgo at 22:32 tomorrow, approximately.

That the Moon makes no further aspect is arithmetic. That a matter begun under a void Moon “fails to come to pass” is inherited practice — the oldest rule in electional astrology, offered as the tradition holds it. Times here are projected from current speeds; a void ending more than a few hours out is good to about the hour, not the minute.

Working the hour TRADITIONAL

The hour of Sun · Authority

The tradition would call this a good hour to begin something.

Approaching people with power over the outcome, and work you want attached to your name.

  1. The Moon still has an aspect to make before it changes sign, so it is not void.A matter begun under a void Moon is traditionally said to "fail to come to pass" — not to go badly, but to go nowhere. It is the first thing an electional astrologer checks and the one that overrules the rest.
  2. The Moon is waning, 30% illuminated.Decrease is worked on a waning Moon: release, banishing, closing out, clearing away.
  3. The hour of Sun falls on the day of Sun — the same planet rules both. The hour of a planet on its own day is the strongest expression of it the week offers. There are only a handful each week and the first is the hour after sunrise.

The checks above are computed. What the tradition makes of each one is inherited practice, set in the lighter type, and none of it names a figure or a saint — those belong to a house and a lineage, not to a page.

Authority. Approaching people with power over the outcome, and work you want attached to your name.

The boundaries are computed from this place’s real sunrise and sunset. What the hour is FOR is inherited practice.

Midnight at the top, noon at the bottom. The lit arc is daylight and the ticks are the planetary hours — wider by day than by night, because they are twelfths of the real sunrise-to-sunset span rather than sixty minutes each. The red mark is now and it does not move. Drag anywhere on the ring, or use the slider, to read a different hour: the gold mark is the one you are looking at. It steps between the twenty-four hours themselves rather than sliding through continuous time, because each of those is a span with computed instants at both ends — everything the readout says is that hour’s own, and turning the dial changes which hour is named and never what is true of it. The drag is uneven on purpose; that is the hours being uneven.

3 of this chart’s 7 standing rules are live right now. Each one states the condition it is testing, so you can check whether it really is met — and how often it is met in an ordinary year.

  1. Saturn is walking backwardslive now

WhenSaturn, this chart's ruling planet, is retrograde in the sky right now.ASTRONOMICAL

Saturn is at 11.2° Aries and moving backwards.

The tradition keeps it forRetrograde motion is an appearance — the planet is not reversing, the Earth is overtaking it. What the tradition does with that appearance is treat the stretch as belonging to the re-: revisiting, revising, returning to what was left. It is a rule about which KIND of work suits the window, and it makes no claim about how anything turns out.TRADITIONAL

How oftenAbout 1 day in 3 — roughly 4 and a half months in every 12.

  2. Mercury is back in Scorpiolive now

WhenThe transiting Mercury is in Scorpio, the sign this chart's Mercury occupies.ASTRONOMICAL

Mercury is at 6.2° Scorpio; in this chart it sits at 5.9° Scorpio.

The tradition keeps it forMercury is the significator the tradition reads for writing, sending, bargaining and paperwork. Over its own natal ground it is the stretch kept for saying the difficult thing in your own words — and the tradition is specific that this is about the SAYING, not about the reply.TRADITIONAL

How oftenRoughly 2 to 3 weeks a year, and irregular — Mercury is never more than 28° from the Sun and can cross one sign 3 times when it turns retrograde inside it.

  3. Where Saturn is standinglive now

WhenWhich of this chart's twelve houses transiting Saturn is currently in.ASTRONOMICAL

Saturn is at 11.2° Aries, which falls in the 3rd house of this chart.

The tradition keeps it forSaturn takes about two and a half years to cross a house, so this is the slowest rule on the page and the one that describes a season of a life rather than an afternoon. The tradition reads its passage as the department of life currently being asked for structure and proof of work — and says nothing whatever about whether that goes well.TRADITIONAL

How oftenAlways live, and it changes room about every 2.5 years — Saturn's 29-year circuit divided by 12.

  4. The day of Saturnnot met

WhenToday is the weekday named for Saturn, the domicile ruler of Capricorn — the sign rising in this chart.TRADITIONAL

Today belongs to Sun; this chart's ruler is Saturn.

The tradition keeps it forThe tradition treats the day of your own ruling planet as the one to put the things that carry your name on. It is the plainest election there is and it needs no chart to use once you know which day it is.TRADITIONAL

How oftenOne day in 7 — about 52 days a year. The week is built out of this table, so the rule is live exactly as often as your day comes round.

  5. The hour of Saturnnot met

WhenThe planetary hour running now is ruled by Saturn.TRADITIONAL

This is the hour of Sun, the 10th night hour.

The tradition keeps it forThe finer grain of the same idea. Where the day sets the tone, the hour is what a practitioner reaches for when something has to be done this afternoon and the day is already spoken for.TRADITIONAL

How often3 or 4 hours in every 24 — the sequence runs through 7 planets and the day holds 24 hours, so each planet takes 24 ÷ 7 of them.

  6. The Moon is back in Ariesnot met

WhenThe transiting Moon is in Aries, the sign it occupied at this chart's birth.ASTRONOMICAL

The Moon is at 5.7° Leo; in this chart it sits at 12.8° Aries.

The tradition keeps it forThe lunar return, monthly rather than yearly. The tradition reads it as the part of the month when a person is most at their own settings — which is why it is kept for deciding what you actually want rather than for negotiating with anybody about it.TRADITIONAL

How oftenAbout 2 days in every 27. The Moon crosses one of 12 signs in a twelfth of its 27.3-day circuit.

  7. The Sun is coming back round to itselfnot met

WhenThe transiting Sun is within fifteen degrees of the degree it held at this chart's birth.ASTRONOMICAL

The Sun is at 12.1° Libra, 39.9° from this chart's 22.1° Scorpio.

The tradition keeps it forThe solar return is the oldest annual marker in the practice and it is simply your birthday, measured properly. The tradition keeps the fortnight either side of it for setting the shape of the year rather than for finishing the last one.TRADITIONAL

How oftenAbout 30 days in every 365 — the Sun moves roughly 1° a day, so a window 30° wide is 30 days long.

These are not a description of this chart’s character. Each one is a condition — something true or false about the sky right now against this chart — paired with what the tradition keeps that condition for. You can check the first half against any ephemeris and catch us being wrong, which is the only kind of astrological statement that can be checked at all. The second half is inherited and is labelled as inherited every time. How often each rule is live is printed beside it on purpose: a personal rule that turns out to be met eight days in ten is a description of ordinary life with your name on it, and you should be able to see that for yourself rather than take our word for it.

The log THIS CHART

Mark a window you actually used and write what you noticed. The question is what you noticed and never whether it worked — the second one asks you to grade an outcome this page promises nothing about. It stays in this browser.

What the labels mean

ASTRONOMICAL
Computed from the position of the sun, moon and planets. Checkable, and true whether or not you believe any of the rest of this.
TRADITIONAL
Inherited practice rather than measurement. This is what the tradition holds, offered as the tradition holds it.
THIS CHART
Derived from the chart this page is currently loaded with — the demonstration chart, not yours. A statement about one chart, not about the world.
COMMUNITY
A pattern across other Navigator members. Correlation in what people did — never evidence that it caused anything.

Every number here is a handle ASTRONOMICAL

A degree is not an object in the sky. It is one three-hundred-and-sixtieth of a turn, agreed on by people who needed to write a turn down. An hour is not an object in the day: the ones on this page are twelfths of the light, so they change length with the season and are rarely sixty minutes. A sign is not a constellation — the zodiac here is measured from the equinox, and the stars behind it drifted centuries ago. An orb is a convention, and two practitioners will use different ones and both be practising correctly.

None of that makes the measurements false. It makes them OURS. The sky does not keep time; it moves. We cut the movement into pieces small enough to say out loud, because a thing you cannot say is a thing you cannot plan around.

That is worth knowing before you use any of it, because it tells you what the pieces are FOR. They are not the thing itself. They are the grip we get on the thing — and a grip is only worth having if you then pull.

Your chart is a picture of one minute that will not come again. The sky over it has moved every minute since, and so have you. You are not standing outside all this reading it off a wall. You are inside it, moving at the same time.

The sky is context. The measurement is a handle. The action is yours.

This page predicts events and never outcomes. Where a planet will be, when an aspect goes exact, when the Moon changes sign — those are ephemeris arithmetic, they are checkable against any almanac, and you are welcome to hold them to the minute. What none of it forecasts is what any of it will do to you: no mood, no luck, no money, no health, and nothing here is a substitute for medical, legal or financial advice. The sky is context. What you do with the next two hours is yours.

This is running on the demonstration chart. Start a reading to see it against your own.
